"You're an English major? Oh...what do you want to do with that?"
If I heard it once I heard that question a dozen times as I started college. It wasn't what most people expected, considering my valedictorian high school award. Some assumed I'd pursue law or something equally high status.
Nope. Words and letters for me, please. I was sure English was for me, but I didn't want to fall into the dreaded stereotype of the English major who ends up working at Starbucks. I wanted to have some sort of plan. I knew I didn't want to teach, and full-time writing wasn't stable enough. I'm still unsure how I thought of working in editing, but I spent my first year of college testing that idea.
I got an internship at a magazine and loved it, then another at The Gospel Coalition. Editing was a good fit. I got a thrill from taking a piece and reworking it, looking at the different angles to make it the best it could be.
And now I'm 10 days away from graduation! Life is about to change big time. I'll be taking on a paid intern position at Lifeway Publishing, but that's not all I have in mind for my next career steps.
I want to start offering editing services outside of a large publishing house, to those who have chosen a different route. So I'm thrilled to introduce my very own Editing Services!
As of now, I'm channeling all my studies and experience into three different services:
Manuscript Assessment: A manuscript assessment provides detailed feedback on your fiction work, focusing on the plot, characters, and overall structure. This is helpful for deciding next steps and for those looking to self-edit.
Proofreading: Proofreading ensures your text is error-free by fixing spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes. Think of it as one of the final polishing steps for your piece.
Copy editing: This service enhances the clarity and quality of your writing by improving style, tone, and structure. It goes beyond just fixing errors; it's about refining the overall quality and clarity of your writing.
These services don't just have to be for fiction! In my studies and work experience, I've touched on many different lengths and genres, so whether your work be academic, articles, blog posts, novels, short stories, or whatever it may be, I can help it blossom to its full potential.
